Applying virgin coconut oil relieves atopic dermatitis more than mineral oil, and it is a great help to make your skin better.
Parents who know how to relieve their child’s atopic dermatitis may have found a natural and effective solution: virgin coconut oil or coconut oil. This is the result obtained in a study conducted by Filipino researchers, and which appears in the International Journal of Dermatology.
Atopic dermatitis, or “atopic eczema” is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. It often develops in infants and causes skin dryness. Excessive hygiene has sometimes been mentioned as a factor in the disease because the immune system needs to confront the “germs” for his maturation.
In this study, researchers compared the effects of virgin coconut oil and vegetable oil on 117 patients with mild to moderate atopic dermatitis. Researchers assessed the severity of the disease through an index (the SCORAD index) at baseline and at 2, 4, and 8 weeks. 59 patients tested coconut oil and 58 mineral oil.
Coconut oil is currently receiving renewed interest, particularly among supporters of the Paleo diet, who consume it for cooking and as a cooking oil because it is one of the most heat stable. It contains a majority of saturated fatty acids (86%), 60% of short chain fatty acids (octanoic, capric, lauric) have interesting properties. Considering that it is mainly the long chain saturated fatty acids that are problematic.
Mineral oils are obtained from hydrocarbons such as oil. Vaseline and many baby products contain.
Results: Symptoms of atopic dermatitis measured by SCORAD index decreased from baseline by 68% in the group that used coconut oil and 38% in the “mineral oil” group. With coconut oil, 47% of patients had moderate improvement in symptoms and 46% response qualified as “excellent”. In the group with mineral oil, symptom improvement was moderate in 34% of patients and 19% excellent.
A slight to moderate atopic dermatitis, applying coconut oils for 8 weeks was therefore more effective than mineral oil.
