Massage for your baby
The art of touch, long taboo in Western countries, is now recognized. From birth, you can massage your baby to communicate with him, secure, pacify and develop their motor skills.

The touch is the primary means of communication toddler, massage can be considered a true body language. It secures the child, from the warmth of the womb to the world, and often comforts the distraught parents, impressed with their newborns by allowing them to get in touch with him. Do not always look for complicated answers: sometimes a baby just cries because he needs caresses and exercise.

The virtues of massage

Baby massage promotes relaxation and provides a real welfare untying the muscles, stimulating blood and lymph circulation, or even by mitigating some pain and promoting digestion. Finally, it contributes to the development of your baby as he prepares his body still “wrapped” in a fetal position to sitting and then standing.

The basic principles

To perform the massage, you must choose a time of day when you and your baby are relaxed (eg just after bathing). Sit quietly (preferably alone with him) in a warm room (26 ° C). Adopt a comfortable position, making sure to have the back straight:


Standing, your baby is on the changing table;

Sitting (e) on the floor, your child being on a towel;

Sitting (e) a chair, your baby is in your lap.

Undress your child more or less depending on the massage you take and especially make sure it does not take cold. Proceed gently and rub a few minutes, only a part of the body if you feel baby is reluctant. Day by day, it gets used and appreciated the welfare you provide it. Gradually, you will manage to run a full massage in thirty minutes. When ill or upset or when you yourself do not feel available, refer to the next meeting.

Advice to guide you

The massage should engender mutual pleasure. Be natural (e), sing, talk to your child, tickle it or embrace it if you feel like it. Do not try to perform mechanical gestures but be guided by your hands and your child’s reactions.

Here are a few suggestions:

Coat your hands with oil (almond, for example) or cleansing milk and warm by rubbing;

Play with your child, talk to him while beginning the massage;

Practise strokes with the palm of your hand flat and slipped pressures with the outer edge of the thumb on the shoulders and back;

Change your position slowly child to continue in the chest, abdomen;

Slide your hands on the arms and legs, lift them, knead them and stretch them; massage the hands and feet and take one by one each finger or toe between your thumb and index fingers to knead and stretch slightly;

To massage the face and head, run with the fingers, small gentle circular movements on top of the head, forehead, temples, forehead, the base of the nose and finish by lightly kneading neck.

To 9-12 months, do not worry if baby manifest impatience: he especially want to move and explore the world around him. But you will see that in moments of fatigue, tension, always appreciate a little massage of the head, feet or back … and you too!
