Obesity and overweight are complex diseases. In women, they cause specific complications on their sexual life.
26% of women are obese and 15% are overweight in France according to body mass index. In women of childbearing age weight gain is 5 to 7kg per decade.
Effects on fertility
We observe some sets of effects on fertility:
Greater difficulty to achieve pregnancy.
A decrease in fertility.
An increased risk of miscarriage.
Decreased effects of treatment against infertility.
Effects on pregnancy
Pregnancy is most at risk for mother and child.
The complications for mother:
A greater risk is observed.
Preeclampsia and gestational hypertension.
The number of caesarean.
Maternal complications after stoma.
The complications for the child.
Effects on cancer
Some cancers are more common in women overweight or obese.
Increased risk of endometrial and breast cancer after menopause as well as those of the esophagus, colon and kidney.
More complications during surgery.
Greater difficulty in adapting doses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
Calculation of overweight
Overweight is determined by calculating the body mass index (BMI).
It is calculated as: Weight in kg divided by height squared centimeter.
The normal BMI is between 18.5 and 25. Below you are considered thin and it is less than 16.5 as undernourished.
Above 25 you are overweight, between 30 and 35 in moderate obesity, between 35 and 40 in severe obesity, beyond 40 in morbid obesity.
Great risks observed : Big baby with all that this entails in terms of delivery more difficult, especially a blocking shoulder during descent into the birth canal and birth defects.
