People at risk Because of  esophageal cancer :

People who suffer from chronic gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn ).

In reaction to this irritation, the cells lining the esophagus can become glandular cells (cells similar to those of the stomach). The medical term that describes this state is “Barrett esophagus syndrome”.

Ten percent of people with chronic GERD develop Barrett’s syndrome. In approximately 0.5% of people with this syndrome results in the formation of an adenocarcinoma. Early detection of adenocarcinoma significantly increases the success of treatment.
