The goji berry

The goji berry, as juice and dried bay  is relatively new to the North American market, despite being consumed by the Chinese for thousands of years.

According to this ancient medicine, goji berry  “feeds” the liver and kidneys, improves vision, “enriches” the blood, reduces rheumatism, promotes sexual life, stimulates the immune system, and more.

Some retailers go even further in their statements, decreeing that the goji berry notably contributes to weight loss, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, memory and muscle strength. And the list of supposed virtues is long.

In the facts

Too good to be true? You guess it! In fact, no recent and reliable clinical studies have proven such allegations. It is true that the goji berry is rich in antioxidants, including carotenoids, zeaxanthin and vitamin C. Some studies in vitro, on animals and on a very small number of human beings have been made. However, the methodology used is questionable, as the allocation of the benefits of this product.

Do not look so far

Goji berry is exotic, which undoubtedly contributes to their popularity and their mystery. But know that blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries are also small treasures of antioxidants. Garlic, onion, spinach and broccoli, to name a few, also abound. They are less exotic, it’s true, but they are much more accessible and economical. By eating at least 5 servings of fruits and varied and colorful vegetables each day, your antioxidant intake is important.

Vitamin C

Goji sellers also boast its high vitamin C. The website of a distributor claims that the goji berry to contain 400 times more than oranges. On one hand, the quantities of goji and compared orange are not specified. On the other hand, we do not know the source of the data. Finally, when we know that almost fills orange alone daily adult requirement of vitamin C, one wonders about the interest to consume 400 times. Other websites which provide more nuanced information, speak of contents per 100 g ranging between 29 and 148 mg, in comparison with orange provides about 75 mg.

Miraculous appearance of products such as purified goji berry powder, goji juice or dried berries should not lose sight of the essential: all of our eating habits and our lifestyle is important. No food or supplement ensures health alone.
